Water Treatment & Production

The Utility Department purchases water under a contract with the Lower Colorado River Authority to obtain untreated lake water from Lake LBJ for the City of Granite Shoals system. In addition, we operate a separate small groundwater (well) system for Sherwood Shores 3, located in Hoover's Valley.

Plant operations personnel responsible for the production of treated water participate in advanced training and state licensing to ensure that the water quality and plant operations operate at their best.

The City's Water Treatment Plant, completed in May 2007, is capable of producing 3.0 million gallons of water a day. The facility has a state-of-the-art filtration system, new filtration equipment described as "Microza Membrane Technology". The PALL filtration system was developed to provide 99.99% reduction of Cryptosporidium and Giardia lamblia cysts with a 0.1-micron (0.0000039") membrane filter.

The City's water storage system consists of two tanks on Driftwood combined storage of 500,00 gallons, two tanks on W. Bluebriar with 500,000 gallons and a 350,000-gallon Elevated Storage tank. Water is pumped to the City's east side 90,000 gallon Ground Storage located on Kingscircle, then pumped to the City's second Elevated Storage tank located on Valley View Lane. The system is sampled monthly in accordance with state regulations at various locations throughout the city.

Water produced at the Water Treatment Plants is treated with:

  • A combination of Chlorine and Ammonia, which are added as a disinfectant under state and federal regulations
  • Acid and caustic for pH adjustments to achieve total organic carbon (TOC) removal before disinfection, which was designed to lower disinfection by-products to greater levels than mandated by state and federal regulatory agencies
  • Aluminum sulfate for coagulation

All chemicals added during treatment and distribution are certified (NSF 60) safe for potable water use.
